Nigeria To Start Arresting Pastors & Imams Who Claim They Can Heal Ebola

According to Vanguard Nigerian Health Minister Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu reacted on Claims by Dr. Maurice Iwu’s thesis regarding bitter kola and Ebola (Iwu said Kolanut could cure Ebola – based on research), Nigerian Health Minister Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu said the government is considering making laws to arrest people who make bogus claims to have a cure for Ebola, and said Nigeria needs to work with Dr. Iwu. The Minister told Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu
“One of the things we decided to focus on by setting up that committee is to streamline claims of possible scientific cure, not a situation where pastors and imams claim they can cure Ebola. We might even go to the extent of making laws to arrest people with such bogus claims. We would take every suggestion seriously. About Professor Iwu, we know that quite a number of Nigerians accessed his article through the internet.

What Professor Iwu and his research team proved in America is that in the laboratory test-tube – not in an animal or a human being – bitter kola extract was able to hinder the growth of Ebola virus, that it was able to slow it down or kill it. That research was not concluded according to Professor Iwu himself and he says he is disappointed that the research was not taken to its logical conclusion.

We need now to work with him and that is why we need him. He is a distinguished world renowned professor of pharmacognosy; and he is someone we value in this country because of his professionalism and working with others; we would be able to put all ideas to the test and see how far we go. This is a serious business.

Ebola Scare Prompts South Korean University To Cancel Invitaion for 3 Nigerian students [DETAILS]

A South Korean university rescinded an invitation for three Nigerians to attend a conference and a group of South Korean medical volunteers called off a trip to West Africa amid growing concerns about the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.

From Reuters:

The Duksung Women's University in Seoul said in a statement the school "politely withdrew" its invitation for three Nigerian students to attend an international conference that it is co-hosting with the United Nations starting from Monday.

Fear about a possible spread of the deadly virus had prompted a student from the university to post a plea on the country's presidential office Web site, asking for the cancellation of the entire event.

The university has said it was going ahead with the conference to be attended by students, including 28 from Africa.

Since February, more than 700 people in West Africa have died from Ebola, a hemorrhagic virus with a death rate of up to 90 percent of those infected. The fatality rate in the current epidemic is about 60 percent.

South Korea on Monday issued a special travel advisory asking people to refrain from visiting Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, while a group of South Korean medical volunteer workers scrapped an annual trip to African countries including Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana scheduled for August.

South Korean bloggers have posted online petitions, including one urging South Korean missionaries working in the region be barred from returning home.

West African leaders agreed last week to take stronger measures to try to bring the worst outbreak of Ebola under control and prevent it spreading outside the region, including steps to isolate rural communities ravaged by the disease.

Most of us are working as nurses in big hospitals, some are bankers and even students, but you won’t know." . “The government should stop criminalising our work,.Just as you are proud of your profession, that is how I am proud of mine. Lagos has 8 Suspected Ebola Cases, 1 Confirmed - Lagos Health Commissioner

The Lagos state Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, today August 5th said there are now eight suspected cases of Ebola in Lagos.

These eight are those who came in contact with Liberian Patrick Sawyer, who died of Ebola shortly after arriving Lagos last month. But out of the 8, only one case has been confirmed while six others have been quarantined even though they have not shown any symptoms of the disease so far, Dr Idris said.

Jim Iyke Speaks On Ebola..

About a week after he fled Liberia over fears of contracting the Ebola virus, actor Jim Iyke has released a statement on the matter.

"May I humbly apologize if my comments on Ebola – based on fear – were taken out of context. The last thing I wanted to do was to alarm anyone.

My heart goes out to all the families who have been affected by the Ebola virus – those who have lost their lives or loved ones, those who are still bravely fighting the disease and all of the communities who are battling to keep the infection under control. You are all in my prayers".

As I travel constantly across continents, most recently USA, Senegal, Liberia, Ghana, Gambia, I have been screened where and when necessary along with the other passengers and I believe it is the responsibility of every citizen to be vigilant and help contain the outbreak by following the advice of the local and international medical professionals and government officials".

Liberia's Dead Ebola Victims Abandoned The Streets

Monrovia – Liberia’s Ebola death toll was rising dramatically, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday, while abandoned bodies were lining streets across the country. A total of 268 people had died of the virus as of 2 August, said Assistant Health Minister for Preventive Services Tolbert Nyenswah. On 28 July, the Health Ministry had recorded 181 deaths, a week earlier 130 deaths.

Among the dead were 37 health workers, according to Nyenswah, and 2 497 people were suspected to be infected with Ebola. Dead bodies were meanwhile lying abandoned as Liberia’s authorities were struggling to cope with the Ebola outbreak that killed hundreds across West Africa, witnesses and local media reported.

Numerous health facilities had to shut down across the country after health care workers were threatened by locals who believe foreigners had brought Ebola into the country.

The World Health Organization is warning of possibly “catastrophic” consequences in West Africa – in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria – which they say is the deadliest ever. As of 31 July, the WHO had recorded 1 323 cases confirmed or suspected cases of Ebola in West Africa. Of these, 729 people have died.

Two doctors treating infected patients have died of the disease, one in Sierra Leone, the other in Liberia. More than 60 healthcare workers also lost their lives, according to the WHO.

A US doctor suffering from Ebola is being treated at an Atlanta hospital after being evacuated from Liberia on Saturday. The outbreak has been caused by the most lethal strain in the family of Ebola viruses. Ebola causes massive haemorrhages and has a fatality rate of 90%. It is transmitted through blood and other body fluids.
